Fourth Quarter Comeback Leads Devils to 17-16 Win
|(Allentown, Pa.)- The Dickinson College football team made a remarkable comeback, scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Muhlenberg College, 17-16 on Saturday.|
Muhlenberg took advantage of a 22-yard touchdown by Dan Deighan (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) and three field-goals from Michael Katz (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) to take a 16-0 lead into the fourth quarter. The Mules led 10-0 at halftime.
The Red Devils opened the fourth quarter with a 78 yard drive asIan Mitchell (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep) capped a nine-play series with a two-yard touchdown run. He hit Craig Helfer (W.Caldwell, N.J./Newark Academy) for the conversion to cut the deficit to 16-8.
The teams traded possessions before junior Gordon Craig (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) dropped a punt that was downed on the Mules' one yard line.
The Mules were forced to punt from inside their own 10, giving the Devils great field position. They went 37 yards on eight plays asTim Wells (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) scored from four yards out. The Devils went for two again, but were stopped to keep Muhlenberg in front 16-14 with just over three minutes to play in the game.
The defense held once again for the Devils as they forced a punt with just over a minute remaining on the clock.
A 43-yard pass to Helfer moved the ball to the Muhlenberg 38 yard line. Mitchell ran the ball to the 24 to set the stage for Gordon Craig.
Craig split the uprights from 41 yards with just seven ticks on the clock as the Red Devils complete a remarkable comeback to improve to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Mitchell completed 11-of-29 passes for 165 yards and rushed for 35 on the day. Senior Joe Sandoe (Myerstown, Pa./Elco) caught six of those passes for a game-high 96 yards while Helfer finished with four catches for 68 yards.
Tim Smith (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) covered 64 yards rushing on 10 carries. Gregory Lord (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) ran for 34 yards, becoming the fourth Red Devil this season to reach 1,000 yards rushing in his career.
Pete Hamill (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) had a big day defensively, recording eight tackles, forcing two fumbles, recovering one and sacking the quarterback for a seven-yard loss.
Michael Maxwell (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) forced a fumble as well, adding six tackles, including 2.5 for losses. Pat McNeal (Glen Mills, Pa./Archmere) and Kevin Wood (Westford, Mass./Phillips) each had seven tackles.
The Red Devils return home next week to host Juniata under the lights on Friday night. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm.
