Red Devils Rally to Sweep Fighting Scots

(Winter Haven, Fla.) – The Dickinson baseball team battled past Gordon College in a highly competitive double-header on Thursday afternoon. The Red Devils scored two runs in four separate innings and held off a late rally to claim the opener 8-7. They struck twice in the bottom of the sixth to secure a 9-7 victory in the nightcap.

Senior Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) drove in two runs with a single in the third inning to put the Red Devils on the board. The Fighting Scots countered with one run in the bottom half of the inning.

Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh School) put the Red Devils up 4-1, driving in two runs with a double down the left field line in the top of the fourth.

In the fifth, Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyoming Area) singled to start the inning and moved to third with two outs, stealing second and advancing on a wild pitch. He came in to score on another wild pitch and Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn Charter) launched a solo homerun in the next at bat.

Josh Popovitch came on as a pinch-runner to score in the fifth and added a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 6-5 in the sixth.

Jacobson led-off the seventh with a triple and came in to score as Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) reached on a fielder's choice. Matilsky crossed the plate on an RBI single from Pat Davis (New Providence, N.J./Morristown-Beard) to stretch the lead to 8-5.

Gordon managed two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Tommy Koide (Morristown, N.J./West Morris Mendham) weathered the storm and recorded three strikeouts to earn his fourth save of the young season.

Jacobson led the Devils at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Carter and Cohen each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Brown tallied two RBI.

Ethan Collins (Elmer, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick) went five innings to earn his second win of the season, recording five strikeouts.

 The teams battled again in game two with the Red Devils scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete the sweep with a 9-7 decision.

The Scots jumped out early, pushing across three runs in the top of the first. Sophomore Brendan Pell (Delran, N.J./Penn Charter) hit a two-out single to score Carter and put a run on the board for the Red Devils.

Dickinson countered a two-run second by the Scots, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull in front 6-5. Carter highlighted the inning with a double and a run scored off a single from Jacobson. Pell reached on an error to record his second RBI of the night.

Gordon answered again in the top of the third, scoring twice to lead 7-6. The Red Devils tied the game in the bottom fourth on a two-out RBI single from Luke Jackson (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) and then pushed across a pair in the sixth to secure the win as Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) came up big with a two-run triple.

Koide stayed on the hill in game two, recording seven strikeouts in a five-inning stint. Connor Langan (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) came on to close out the game and earn the win, booking four strikeouts and allowing just one hit.

Carter went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jacobson and Jackson each finished with two hits while Pell and Reilly each drove in two runs.

The Red Devils improve to 8-4 on the season. They wrap up their spring break tour with a double-header on Friday, taking on Keuka College.
