(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team turned in a strong performance on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at MacPhail Field, turning back Muhlenberg College, 6-1, to sweep the series and improve to 16-11 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial Conference.
Muhlenberg used a pair of doubles from John Icaza and Matt Riebesell to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
The Red Devils answered in the bottom half of the inning as senior Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) drew a walk to set the stage for a two-run homer over the right field wall by sophomore Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyoming Area).
Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./The Pennington School) reached on an error and would come in to score as Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) reached on an error, laying a well-executed drag bunt down the first base line.
The Devils added two runs in the seventh to stretch the lead to 5-1. Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown Beard) was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Sumners.
Sumners stole second and came in on an RBI from Hopkins. Pat Davis (New Providence, N.J./Morristown-Beard) singled to start the eighth and a single from Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh) set up another RBI knock for Sumners for the final of 6-1.
Ben Woodard (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) earned the win, going six innings and allowing just three hits. Alex Gusikoff (Ardmore, Pa./Malvern Prep) recorded two strikeouts in one inning of relief before Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) added a pair of strikeouts to close out the final two innings.
Sumners went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Carter was 2-for-4 with two RBIs on the day.
The Red Devils have a big week, traveling to Elizabethtown on Tuesday and them McDaniel on Wednesday. They will return home to face McDaniel again on Friday.
