(Allentown, Pa.) – Junior pitcher Billy O'Neil (South Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) improved to 6-0 on the season, earning the win as the Dickinson baseball team topped Muhlenberg, 8-4, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Devils took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) started the inning with a triple and came in on an RBI single from senior Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit).
Muhlenberg tied the game in the bottom of the fifth but the Devils would counter with a three-run sixth. First-year Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) hit a two-run homer and Thompson scored for the second time on an RBI from Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School).
The Mules answered again, capitalizing on an error to tie the game with three in the bottom half of the sixth. The Devils came through with three again, in the top of the seventh, and tacked on another insurance run in the night for the 8-4 final.
Chudacoff went 3-for-5 with an RBI while Thompson added three hits and scored twice on the day. Hopkins tallied two hits and Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh School) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
O'Neil allowed just six hits in six innings of work while recording four strikeouts to earn his sixth win of the season. Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) came on for the save, surrendering one hit a striking out four in three innings of relief.
The Red Devils improve to 14-10 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Muhlenberg at MacPhail Field on Friday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
