(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team swept a non-conference double-header with visiting Juniata College on Saturday afternoon at MacPhail Field. The Red Devils won the opener 2-0, and claimed the nightcap with a 5-2 decision.
Junior Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./The Pennington School) led-off the second inning with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice from Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and an RBI single by Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College).
Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) doubled to start the fourth but was thrown out at home on a single from Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro). Reilly would come in to score on a single from Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh School) to double the lead at 2-0.
Sophomore pitcher Ryan Vasel (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) went eight innings on the hill to earn the win, scattering five hits and striking out three on the day. Cristian Acosta (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire School) came on to earn the save, forcing three ground-outs in the ninth.
Carter went 3-for-4 in game one while Reilly and Sumners each went 2-for-3.
Brown put the Devils on the board in game two, reaching on a walk and eventually coming in to score on a wild pitch. The Eagles tied the game in the top of sixth but the Devils would answer with a pair in the bottom half of the inning.
Sumners singled and scored on an RBI from Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill), and Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) added an RBI with a sacrifice fly to score Thompson.
Sakowicz tallied a pair of RBIs in the seventh, driving in Brown and Sumners to stretch the lead to 5-1.
Juniata capitalized on an error to start the nine, adding a run for the final of 5-2.
Sakowicz led the way with a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Sumners and Brown each scored twice in game two.
Billy O'Neil (South Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) remained unbeaten on the year, improving to 5-0 with three strikeouts while allowing just three hits. Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) came on for the save, recording a pair of strikeouts in a one-hit, three inning effort.
The Red Devils improve to 12-8 on the season. They are scheduled to travel to Elizabethtown College on Tuesday for a 3:30 pm start.
