(Flemington, N.J.) – The Dickinson baseball team swept a double-header from SUNY Oneonta on Sunday, playing at Diamond Nation in Flemington, New Jersey.
The Red Devils scored four runs in the bottom of the first, going on to claim the season opener, 11-2. They posted a 7-5 decision in the nightcap for a 2-0 start in 2017.
A lead-off walk and an RBI single put the Red Dragons on the board in the top of the first. The Red Devils answered with four runs in the bottom of the first with the help of a three-run homer from junior Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School).
Sophomore Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) led off with a double and came in to score on a single by Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill). Senior Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) reached on a error to set up the three-run shot
Oneonta pushed across a run on the third before Ben Rappaport (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's) and Ben Woodard (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) combined to hold the Dragons to just two hits over the final six innings.
A pair of errors in the third led to more RBIs for Chudacoff and the Red Devils erupted with three doubles in the fourth to stretch the lead to 9-2.
Austin Sumners (West Trenton, N.J./The Pennington School) tripled and scored in the fifth on a sacrifice from Sackowicz. Sakowicz also doubled and scored in the fourth. Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh School) doubled and scored in the fourth, and led off the seventh with a triple. Sumners returned the favor with a sacrifice RBI to score Brown.
Rappaport earned the win, going five innings and recording five strikeouts. Woodard struck out six and allowed just two hits in four innings of relief.
Chudacoff drove in five runs, going 2-for-4 in the opener. Hopkins went 3-for-5 with two doubles, and Sakowicz drove in two runs and scored twice behind two hits.
Chudacoff launched a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to put the Devils in front 6-5, and first-year David Farnham (Atherton, Calif./Menlo School) hit a solo shot to give Dickinson an insurance run as they rallied to a 7-5 win.
Sakowicz was hit by a pitch and later came in to score on a sacrifice from Hopkins to start the game. The Dragons answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.
First-year Pat Davis (New Providence, N.J./Morristown-Beard) hit a homerun in the fourth and the Devils added two in the fifth to take the lead, 4-3, as Sakowicz had another double and joined first-year Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) to come in on a double from Thompson.
Oneonta produced lone runs in the seventh and eighth to regain the lead, 5-4. That set the stage for the dramatic Red Devil rally in the ninth. Hopkins hit a one-out single before Chudacoff put Dickinson back in on top with his second homerun of the day.
The Devils turned a double-play and Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) struck out the final batter to secure the win in the bottom of the ninth. Ryan Vasel (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) went 6.2 innings in the start, recording four strikeouts. Collins came on to close in the seventh and would earn the win.
Five players had multiple hits for the Devils in the nightcap. Chudacoff went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and and run scored. Hopkins went 2-for-4 and Sacowicz added a pair of hits and scored a pair of runs. Davis added a double to his homerun and Brown tallied back-to-back singles in the nightcap.
The Red Devils travel to Penn State Harrisburg on Thursday to face the Lions at 3:00 pm.
