(Auburndale, Fla.) – The Dickinson baseball team improved to 3-0, sweeping a double-header with Clark University on Saturday. The Red Devils held off a rally to win the opener, 3-2, and captured the nightcap, 9-4.
The Red Devils put a run on the board in the third inning as Hank Sanders (Wellsville, Pa./Northern) tripled to right center and came in to score on sacrifice fly from Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley).
Dickinson tacked on a pair in the fourth. Senior Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) drew a lead-off walk and stole second. He moved to third on a single from Sam Wachs (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) and scored on an error off the bat of Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro).
First-year Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) doubled for the second time in the game, scoring Wachs to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Clark rallied in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits. Dolan threw out a runner at home to keep the Devils in front, 3-2. Clark threatened in the sixth, loading the bases behind a pair of hits. Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came on in relief to close out the inning and the game.
Dolan went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Phil Werner (Potoman, Md./St. Andrew's) added a double as well. Tyler Clauson-Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) earned the win, scattering six hits while recording four strikeouts in 3.2 inning.
First-year Mo Felt (Wheeling, W. Va./The Linsly School) tallied four strikeouts in two scoreless innings, before Kurtz came on to close out the game.
Clark took an early lead in the nightcap, scoring an unearned run in the first inning. The Cougars scored three more in the third, erupting for five hits in the inning.
The Red Devils answered in the fourth, scoring seven runs on four hits. Haynes capped the rally with a two-run homer, scoring Sanders, who cleared the bases with a misplayed ball to right field. Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) and Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) were hit by pitches to record RBIs in the inning.
The defense went 1-2-3 and the Red Devils came back in to score two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tursi walked and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Wachs. The Red Devils loaded the bases and Sanders scored Helmandollar with a single to right field.
Haynes led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, homerun and two RBIs. Tursi and Helmandollar each came in to score twice.
First-year Cristian Acosta (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire School) went three innings on the hill before Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) came on in relief to earn the win, posting six strikeouts and allowing just a pair of hits in a four-inning effort.
The Red Devils improve to 3-0 on the season. They are in action again on Sunday, facing Wittenberg University in a double-header.
