(Grantham, Pa.)- The Dickinson College baseball team faced-off against Messiah College for an exhibition double-header on Saturday. The Red Devils tied the first game of the day, 16-16. This battle featured an offensive explosion from each team. Dickinson fell to the Falcons in a heartbreaker, 7-6, in the second half of the two-game set. |

Dickinson opened up the flood gates in
the second inning by putting up six runs and batting around the
order. Tom Van Horn '11, David Bernstein '13, Steve Anzalone '13
and Garrett Horan '12 each picked up an RBI in this statement of an
inning. Andrew Mauro '13 threw two scoreless innings to set the
pace for the Red Devil defense.
The Red Devils added two more runs in
the top of the third frame, but Messiah rallied to score five runs
on four hits in the bottom of the inning bringing the score to 8-5.
Dickinson was held in check offensively until the seventh inning
when Van Horn and Evan Fitzpatrick '11 came through, each with an
RBI single.
The Falcons scored ten runs in the
last four innings capped off by a two-run dinger, bringing the
offensive rout to a halt and concluding the game in a 16-16 draw.
Santoro '13 and Fitzpatrick led the way for the Red Devils. Santoro
was 3-6 including four runs scored and three swipes on the base
paths. Fitzpatrick provided the firepower necessary to keep up with
the high-scoring affair, adding three hits, three runs and two
RBI.
In the second game of the day, the Red
Devils jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the third inning
thanks to some timely hitting by outfielders, captain Mike Schuster
'11, and Andrew Sterling. Dickinson added another tally in the
fifth inning when Schuster scored his second run of the
contest.
Sean White '12 and Brett Friedman '10
threw the first five innings without allowing an earned run and
posting five strikeouts and only four hits and one free pass in the
process.
Garret Horan '12 scored after being
hit by a pitch on an RBI single from Evan Farha '11 in the seventh
inning. However, the Falcons scored five runs over the course of
the fifth, sixth and seventh innings tying the contest at 5-5.
Pete Bilali '12 crossed the dish on an
RBI groundout by Matt Vidal '12 to put the Red Devils up 6-5 in the
top of the ninth.
Fitzpatrick came out for his second
inning of work to shut the door for Dickinson, but Messiah had
other plans. They picked-up a walk-off, two RBI single with two
outs to win the game.
Schuster went 3-for-5 and scored two runs, had two stolen bases, an RBI and two walks to spark the Red Devils potent offense. However, it was just not enough as the 12 men that Dickinson left on base proved to be costly in the 7-6 loss to Messiah College.
